A cordless power tool’s performance depends on more than its motor or advertised battery capacity. The cells inside the battery pack help determine how much power the tool can deliver, how long it can work, and how its performance changes over time.
For buyers, the challenge is understanding what actually matters: cell size, discharge capability, manufacturing consistency, or brand reputation.
This guide explains common power tool cell specifications, introduces major Chinese and international manufacturers, and outlines what to check when purchasing complete cordless tools.
1. Common Cell Formats and Key Specifications
18650 and 21700 cells
Two widely used cylindrical formats in cordless power tool batteries are 18650 and 21700. Samsung SDI identifies both formats in its power tool and garden tool battery portfolio.Samsung SDI’s cylindrical battery overview
| Cell format | Approximate dimensions* | Main design consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 18650 | 18 mm diameter × 65 mm length | Useful where compact size and pack weight matter |
| 21700 | 21 mm diameter × 70 mm length | Provides more space for capacity, power capability, or a balance of both |
These are nominal format dimensions. Actual dimensions and tolerances must be checked against the manufacturer’s drawing.
A larger cell is not automatically a better cell. A high-power 18650 and a high-capacity 21700 may be designed for different jobs. Other formats and pouch cells are also used, so cell size alone does not define battery quality.
The parameters that matter
| Parameter | What it tells you | What buyers should check |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity, Ah or mAh | The charge a cell can deliver under specified conditions | Minimum versus typical capacity, test current, temperature, and cutoff voltage |
| Energy, Wh | The amount of stored electrical energy | Useful for comparing batteries with different voltages |
| Nominal voltage | The cell’s reference operating voltage | Chemistry and the number of cells connected in series |
| Discharge current, A | The current a cell can supply under stated conditions | Continuous versus pulse rating, duration, and temperature limits |
| Discharge rate, C | Current expressed relative to capacity | Whether the rating is continuous or temporary |
| Internal resistance | Resistance contributing to voltage drop and heat | Measurement method, temperature, state of charge, and cell age |
| Cycle life | Performance retained after repeated charging and discharging | Test conditions and the defined end-of-life threshold |
| Charging capability | Permitted charging current and voltage | Charging temperature limits and effects on service life |
| Temperature range | Permitted charging and discharging conditions | Separate charging limits from discharging limits |
Manufacturer data sheets should be read as a complete set of conditions. For example, Molicel’s P45B data sheet specifies charging, discharge cutoff, and ambient conditions alongside its performance information.Molicel P45B data sheet
What does a discharge rating such as 10C mean?
C-rate relates current to cell capacity:
Discharge current = capacity in Ah × C-rate
For a 2.0 Ah cell, 10C corresponds to 20 A. For a 2.5 Ah cell, 10C corresponds to 25 A.
However, a “10C” label is incomplete without its operating conditions. A short pulse rating cannot be treated as a continuous current rating.
Cell capacity and battery pack capacity are different
Connecting cells in series increases voltage. Connecting them in parallel increases capacity.
For example, using cells rated at 3.6 V nominal and 2.0 Ah:
A 5S1P configuration has five cells in series: 18 V nominal, 2.0 Ah, approximately 36 Wh.
A 5S2P configuration has two parallel strings: 18 V nominal, 4.0 Ah, approximately 72 Wh.
These are illustrative calculations. Actual usable energy depends on operating conditions and system limits.
Voltage labels also need context. DEWALT, for example, distinguishes its 20V MAX initial no-load rating from an 18 V nominal rating. A larger number on a label does not necessarily indicate a different voltage class—and matching voltage does not establish compatibility.DEWALT instruction manual
2. Major Cell Brands: A Closer Look at Chinese Manufacturers
Chinese cell manufacturers have documented relationships with major domestic and international tool companies. They deserve serious consideration alongside established international suppliers.
The following profiles distinguish disclosed customer relationships from confirmed volume supply. A relationship with a tool group does not establish that every brand or battery model within that group uses the same cells.
Tenpower
Tenpower is a Chinese cylindrical lithium-ion cell manufacturer within the Azure group. Its applications include power tools, light mobility, and household appliances.
Disclosed international customers: Azure’s official website identifies Bosch, TTI, Black & Decker, and Makita as core Tenpower customers.Azure’s official business overview
Disclosed domestic customers: Azure’s 2021 interim report names Dongcheng and Dayi among its tool customers. The report also states that Tenpower entered Black & Decker’s supply chain in 2018 and had achieved large-scale shipments by the reporting period.Azure’s 2021 interim report
These disclosures support customer relationships, rather than a claim about every customer’s current cell models or purchasing share.
EVE Energy
EVE Energy’s business includes consumer, power, and energy storage batteries. Its cylindrical battery portfolio includes solutions for power tools and outdoor power equipment.
Verified tool industry relationship: In November 2022, EVE announced that it received a Global Strategic Cooperation award from Stanley Black & Decker at the group’s supplier conference in Suzhou. The announcement explicitly connects the recognition to EVE’s cylindrical battery business.EVE’s official cooperation announcement
EVE has also presented power tool and outdoor equipment solutions, including its 21700 50PL tabless cell.EVE’s official product announcement
The cooperation award establishes a documented group-level relationship. It does not identify every participating tool brand or battery model.
Highstar
Highstar is a Chinese battery manufacturer with cylindrical lithium-ion products and publicly disclosed power tool customer relationships.
Customers named in its official announcement include TTI, Positec, Chervon, Bosch, Black & Decker, and Dongcheng. Its June 2024 announcement describes an established relationship with TTI following an audit in 2019 and reports volume deliveries.Highstar’s official customer and supply announcement
A separate 2025 announcement records another production line passing a TTI audit.Highstar’s production line announcement
TTI therefore has explicit historical volume-supply evidence. The other names should be presented as disclosed customer relationships without adding unreported shipment quantities or cell models.
Lishen
Lishen is a Chinese lithium-ion battery manufacturer with cylindrical products for power tools, garden tools, and other applications.
Its official report on the 2024 China International Hardware Show describes 18-, 21-, and 46-series cylindrical products and identifies power tools among their applications.Lishen’s official exhibition report
Qixin
Qixin refers here to Xinxiang Qixin Power Supply Material Co., Ltd., a Chinese manufacturer established in 2003, according to its website.
The company focuses on high-rate cylindrical lithium-ion cells and integrated power solutions. Its website lists 18650 and 21700 products and identifies power tools as an application.Qixin’s official website
For a purchasing project, Qixin should be evaluated through model-specific specifications, representative production samples, and application testing.
International brands remain relevant
International manufacturers also offer cells for tools and other demanding applications:
| Manufacturer | Relevant background |
|---|---|
| Samsung SDI | Korean battery manufacturer offering cylindrical cells for power tools and garden equipment.Official overview |
| LG Energy Solution | Korean battery manufacturer with solutions for industrial, household, and garden tools.Official tool application page |
| Murata | Japanese manufacturer whose cylindrical battery applications include cordless tools; it acquired Sony’s relevant battery business in 2017.Battery business overview, transfer announcement |
| Panasonic Energy | Japanese battery manufacturer offering high-rate cylindrical lithium-ion products for power tools and industrial equipment.Official product overview |
| Molicel | High-power cylindrical cell manufacturer with power tools among its applications.Official website |
Chinese suppliers have expanded buyers’ options, but a blanket claim that international cells are no longer mainstream would overstate the evidence. Samsung SDI, for example, stated in its June 2025 corporate history that it continued to hold the leading position in the power tool battery market. This is the company’s own statement, rather than an independently verified ranking.Samsung SDI’s 2025 statement
There is also no universal brand ranking that can replace a comparison of specific cell models.
3. What Can More Expensive Cells Offer?
A higher price may reflect better performance, tighter manufacturing control, stronger technical support, or commercial factors. Price alone does not prove quality.
When comparing equivalent products, a higher-priced cell may offer:
Better performance under load: Less voltage drop and lower heat generation at the required current.
More usable energy: Better energy delivery under the tool’s actual load, rather than only in a low-current capacity test.
Longer service life: Better capacity and power retention under comparable cycling and storage conditions.
Tighter consistency: Smaller differences in capacity, resistance, and self-discharge between cells.
Better traceability and support: Clear production records, controlled product changes, and technical assistance.
These advantages need evidence. A premium high-capacity cell can still be unsuitable for a tool requiring high discharge current. Equally, a competitively priced Chinese cell may satisfy the application well.
Why are some cells unusually cheap?
Low prices can have legitimate explanations, including large orders, efficient production, inventory clearance, or a lower-performance product specification.
Other unusually low offers may involve:
| Possible explanation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Old inventory | Manufacturing date, storage history, and current performance |
| Off-specification or downgraded cells | Actual acceptance criteria and the manufacturer’s grading definition |
| Recovered cells from used packs | Whether cells are new, unused, and traceable |
| Rewrapped or counterfeit products | Original manufacturer, model identity, and supply channel |
| Exaggerated capacity or current claims | Independent measurements under stated conditions |
| Missing quality controls or support | Inspection records, warranty terms, and responsibility for failures |
These are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions that every low-cost cell is defective.
Labels such as “Grade A” are insufficient by themselves. Buyers need an agreed specification covering capacity, resistance, self-discharge, appearance, traceability, and application suitability.
The useful comparison is cost per unit of verified performance and service life, rather than price per cell alone.
4. How to Choose the Right Cell—and the Right Cordless Tool
Start with the application
Define the tool’s workload before choosing a brand:
Required working and peak current;
Duration and frequency of heavy loads;
Runtime target;
Battery size and weight limits;
Operating temperature;
Charging time and expected service life.
A compact screwdriver used intermittently and a grinder used for prolonged cutting place different demands on their batteries.
Compare specific models under the same conditions
Request the original manufacturer’s data sheet and compare:
Minimum capacity and discharge energy;
Continuous and pulse current conditions;
Voltage drop and temperature rise;
Cycle and storage test conditions;
Permitted charging current and temperature;
Dimensions, weight, and production traceability.
Do not compare one supplier’s short pulse rating with another supplier’s continuous rating, or cycle counts obtained under different test conditions.
Validate the complete battery pack
A cell’s advertised current rating is not automatically the pack’s current rating. Pack performance also depends on:
Cell matching and current sharing;
Interconnects and weld quality;
Protection electronics and temperature sensing;
Heat dissipation and mechanical support;
Contacts, insulation, and enclosure construction;
Coordination with the charger and tool.
The cell, pack, charger, and tool need to work as one system.
What should buyers check when purchasing complete tools?
| Area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Cell identity | What manufacturer and exact model are supplied? Can substitutions occur without approval? |
| Battery performance | Are capacity, energy, runtime, and temperature results available under defined conditions? |
| Protection system | How does the system handle overcurrent, excessive temperature, overcharge, and overdischarge? |
| Tool performance | Can it complete representative work consistently as the battery discharges? |
| Mechanical quality | Are contacts, housing, latches, and internal connections suitable for the intended working environment? |
| Charging system | Is charging controlled appropriately across the specified temperature range? |
| Platform compatibility | Which tools and chargers are explicitly supported? |
| Production consistency | Do delivered products match the approved samples and agreed specifications? |
| After-sales support | What are the warranty terms, replacement arrangements, and service capabilities? |
A practical acceptance test should measure real work: holes drilled, screws driven, or cuts completed under controlled conditions, alongside runtime and temperature. It should include representative production units rather than a single selected sample.
A documented cell brand is a useful starting point. The purchasing decision should rest on the exact cell model, the quality of the complete battery system, and the tool’s verified performance in its intended application.
